Persephone and the Scream Queer aka Roger Conners Discuss The Hunt, Roddy Alves and When Bad Movies Happen to Good Actresses or Where is She These Days?

Persephone (Theresa M) and The Scream Queer (Roger Conners) on a roadside adventure with Dexter.

My favorite independent local horror actor and filmmaker Roger Conners, aka The Scream Queer joined me to give his first reactions to the controversial film The Hunt, starring Betty Gilpin and Hillary Swank.  In addition, we will discussed Roddy Alve (the transgender Human Ken and now Human Barbie Doll), when subpar movies and talented actresses collide and a discussion of actresses we wish would have a comeback.

The “Blonding” of Ana

It all begins with an idea.

No, this not a soft porn reference, although the moment I typed that title I could see how stupid it sounded. Whatever. Just trying to tie in a visual for your reference of current “it girl’ Ana de Armas in some leaked production photos as Marilyn Monroe in the yet to be released Blonde, directed by Andrew Dominik (best known for Killing Them Softly and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford both featuring Brad Pitt.)

To say that taking on this epic Joyce Carol Oates novel, a retelling of the Marilyn/Norma Jean narrative told through the point of view of the titular icon, is a big swing for this director would be an understatement. And yes, I would prefer to see a female director like Mary Harron, Sofia Coppola or Andrea Arnold attached to this particularly female project, I am trying to reserve my judgement.

Regardless and for the sake of this anticipated project, I hope Andrew Dominick knows what he is doing. Undeniably, Ana de Armas is strikingly beautiful, almost in an other-worldy manner in the guise of Monroe. The key will be if she is able to evoke the conflicted inner turmoil of the pained actress while simultaneously projecting that movie star image to the public. And now that Ana de Armas is dating Ben Affleck (sigh), we can only hope the glare of a high profile romance doesn’t outshine or dampen her talent.

Elisabeth Moss: A Millenial Riot Grrrl

It all begins with an idea.

Movies-1-Her-Smell.jpg

Elisabeth Moss plays 90’s era rock and roller Becky Something in Alex Ross Perry’s Her Smell. Click HERE to watch the trailer.

Elisabeth Moss (I’m just gonna call her Lizzy, ok) seems incapable of making a career misstep. Little known movie Her Smell, directed by Alex Ross Perry and Pop Culture Persephone’s “Hidden Gem of the Week” is no exception to this rule. Moss delivers a balls to the wall performance that should have garnered her at the very least an Independent Spirit Award and at best, an Oscar nomination. It didn’t, but it’d just a matter of time for Lizzy.

Check out the first Pop Culture Persephone Mini-Sode featuring Moss at the piano and guitar.

Bonus Episode: What the Hell Should I Watch During this COVID-19 Lockdown? (Part 1)

It all begins with an idea.

Pictured left to right: Dave Burd is insecure Jewish rapper Lil Dickey in the eponymous Dave on FX; Pamela Adlon juggles raising three girls and her mother in season 4 of Better Things on FX; Matt Dillon is a misunderstood teen who helps lead an adolescent rebellion in 1979’s Over the Edge available for rent on Amazon.

Let’s face it, COVID-19 has everyone either sick, in fear of getting sick, jobless, or just pain depressed. In this Part 1 of 2 bonus episode, Persephone gives some hot, out of left field picks on things that will make you laugh, make you emotional or just plain make you nostalgic for a very young Matt Dillon.

Part 2: Pop Culture Distractions During the Time of COVID-19

It all begins with an idea.

Top Left: Evan Rachel Wood and Thandie Newton make it out of the park in Season 3 of Westworld; Center, Tom and Rita’s most tattooed progeny Chet Hanks gives us the lowdown on his infected parents; Top Right: M Knight Shyamalan’s Servant has me feeling mixed up. Bottom Left: Cool cat Idris Elba gets the ‘Rona; Center, Pam Smart want her narrative re-written in Captivated: The Trials of Pamela Smart; Bottom Right: Is Jojo Siwa secretly an adult or just a survivor of Dance Moms?

I’m not sure there has been a more odd gallery of characters, but in this full episode of Pop Culture Persephone, Part 2 of What the Hell Should I Watch During COVID-19 Lockdown, Persephone provide you with some updates on COVID-19 and its growing impact on how we are consuming media, along with more ideas of what to sink your teeth into while ruminating about the end of days on your couch.
